Local indigenous artist and Bibbullmun elder Toogarr Morrison wants to set the record straight – Nyoongah is a term referring to only men, while Yorgah is the word for woman. As an elder, artist and historian, Toogarr has been instrumental in the promotion and explanation of Aboriginal histories through his artwork. He has had 5 solo shows and gained a masters degree as well as conducting a public art practice.
This work is part of a set of new paintings for his solo show which recognise and celebrate the females of the Bibbullmun Nation of south west Western Australia and their role in society, both in the past and in the present.
The vibrant style and imposing scale combines political with metaphysical and draws upon a number of traditions of painting.
