Nyarrapyi GIles’s painting Warmarungu

Nyarrapyi’s paintings depict a site called ‘Warmarungu’ near Karku, Nyarrapyi’s birthplace. This is where the ochres are collected for ceremonial use. In the dreaming times many emus went down into the the rockholes and some took the form of trees. Nyarrapyi Giles paintings depict the ‘emu spirits’ which are released like a wind when the ochres are dug out of the ground and they take physical form again. Her paintings show the travels of the emus in the dreaming times and where they stopped at the rockholes for a drink. Location: 300km west of Uluru, WA.
