Howards Mind by Julian Masters
Central TAFE Showcase Gallery
10 - 16 September

Perth based photographer Julian Masters has created Howard’s Mind as a document of his wanderings
in the world. What started out being a love for the camera has ended as a social documentary and a
love for the subjects encountered in urban spaces. The images explore both the human condition and the
structure of urban towns.
Created over the last 25 years through a range of film and digital mediums, the collection is candid,
displaying insight into and empathy with the lives and environs of the often anonymous subjects.

Indigenous Art from the South-West
from the collection of Sue and Ian Bernadt
These paintings by Indigenous artists from the South-West speak of a passion for place and
often have a surreal, spiritual longing for an Arcadian past. The Carrolup style has had
a profound influence on artists of the region as it so perfectly captures the distinctive natural
world of southern Western Australia.

Guy and Margaret Vinciguerra celebrate the ancient and contemporary butting up against

Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) was an Indian artist, poet, musician, philosopher and spiritual guide.
He chose the theme of birds to symbolise the freedom of the soul. His simple and expressive line
drawings, said Yehudi Menuhin, “transport us men, who would be winged, to the birds, which we have
tried to emulate.”

Nyarrapyi GIles's painting Warmarungu
Nyarrapyi’s paintings depict a site called ‘Warmarungu’ near Karku, Nyarrapyi’s birthplace. This is where
the ochres are collected for ceremonial use. In the dreaming times many emus went down into the the rockholes
and some took the form of trees. Nyarrapyi Giles paintings depict the ‘emu spirits’ which are released like a wind
when the ochres are dug out of the ground and they take physical form again. Her paintings show the travels of
the emus in the dreaming times and where they stopped at the rockholes for a drink. Location: 300km west of Uluru, WA.

Vinnies launch Winter Appeal 2008 aided by blessings from Arch Bishop Hickey
The St Vincent de Paul Society will attempt to put a human face on homelessness today at the launch of the
2008 Winter Appeal by showcasing an exhibition of photographs taken by those who witness poverty every day in
Western Australia. Every night over 100,000 Australian’s sleep homeless and a quarter of those are children
under the age of 18, providing more reason to highlight their desperate plight as winter begins. Disposable
cameras were sent out to people in need and to those who provide assistance and were asked to capture
a snapshot of their lives and what they witness. The result is a gallery full of eye-opening photographs on display
over the next two days at the Central Design Centre in Northbridge. The St Vincent de Paul Society’s State President
Genevieve De Souza hopes that by showcasing these photographs people will stop seeing the homeless as
a ‘faceless population’ but as someone’s brother, sister, mother, or loved one. "In today’s society, homelessness
doesn’t carry the same connotations as it used to, now the homeless is the family down the road whose rent has
just gone up again and whose pay no longer covers the bills, food and education expenses" she said.
"One in four Australian households is just three pay packets away from homelessness; and currently the Society’s
Call Centre in Belmont is receiving over 500 calls for assistance a week predominantly asking for food, proving
that feeding the family is becoming impossible for many."
The Society’s busiest time is winter and this years appeal aims to raise $600,000 to ensure no one should have to
go hungry or sleep in the cold this winter.
"The Society doesn’t just want to help people in the short term, we work to provide those in need of assistance with
long term solutions through education and support," Genevieve said.
Exhibition runs until Friday 6 June from 10am - 3pm at Central TAFE Showcase Space Gallery, 12 Aberdeen St, Perth
