3D NOW

18 emerging designers from Perth’s Central Institute of Technology (CIT) are set to exhibit a diverse range of contemporary furniture and products from 2 September. 3D NOW is an exhibition of original work by second and third year Three-Dimensional Design students at CIT. It will be the first time these pieces have been shown in Perth.

The works range from intricately-designed one-off furniture pieces to unique lights and clocks, and demonstrate a vast array of design skills, methods and materials exploration. The majority of the pieces were made by the students in CIT’s own workshop.

Three-Dimensional Design Course Coordinator Peter Kitely said having students design with exhibitions in mind tended to result in work that was both highly original and industry-ready.

“Exhibiting in a professional environment to both the public and the furniture industry increases the demand on the students’ creativity,” Mr Kitely said. “We encourage students to design thoughtful and original pieces that are ready for the contemporary market. We’re delighted with how they’ve responded to that challenge and the feedback from industry has been very positive.”

The 3D NOW exhibition follows a successful showing in Melbourne in July, where the CIT students were amongst a select 50 Australian finalists in Vibrant Visions in Design (VIVID).
VIVID is the contemporary section of Furnitex, which is Australia’s largest furniture trade show. In all, over 15,000 people attended the show over four days.

VIVID Curator, Uli Hasel, said this year’s significant CIT representation was testament to the consistently high quality work produced at the institute in recent years. “There were a number of highly original pieces from Western Australia this year, and in general the Perth entries

have achieved a very pleasing standard in terms of quality and design content,” Ms Hasel said.
