Susan Flavell is a talented WA sculptor whose work, often deals with animals or creatures including the real, the hybrid, the fantastic and even the monstrous. Known for her series of large cardboard creatures, she also works in cast bronze, including public art works. In this exhibition the focus is on domestic and mythic imagery and a new direction – exploiting ceramic techniques to create a dialogue between the form of the work and the surface.

The MHF is the premier visual art patronage association based in WA which has generated close to $1 million in artist commissions since 1991, supporting artists by a subscription program.

The Mark Howlett Foundation commission gives the artist freedom to experiment with various threads of their practice and in Susan’s case, translate ideas across materials from drawing to cardboard to ceramics sculpture, incorporating ideas of drawing and the figurine.
